Sutherland earns second team honors. Ilia and Sutherland awarded Freshman Team.

Johnson City, Tenn. (Nov. 10, 2015) – The Southern Conference announced Tuesday that Fletcher Ekern (Knoxville, Tenn.) and James Smith (Eastbourne, England) earned First Team All-Conference honors, while ETSU garnered five postseason awards.

Ekern leads the team and the conference with ten goals this season. He is also second in the conference in points (23) behind 2015-16 SoCon Player of the Year, Jacques Francois. Ekern has started in 16 games and played in all 17 matches this season. He has scored five points in two matches this season, which is his career best.

Smith is one of three players to start all 17 games this year for ETSU. Smith is second on the team with six goals and first on the team in assists with five. He was awarded Player of the Week honors in the month of September and also Player of the Month for the month of September. Smith led the Bucs to a 3-1 win over the highly-ranked Kentucky Wildcats as he netted a goal and tallied an assist.

Freshman goalie, Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) was the lone Buc on the second team. Sutherland has started every game as he accumulated 1615 minutes between the posts. He is third in the SoCon in save percentage with .744 and saves with 64. Sutherland and his defensive backline have pitched five shutouts this season, which is tied for second in the conference.

Rookies, Christian Ilia (Norrkoping, Sweden) and Sutherland were placed on the All-Freshman Team along with ten players from the conference. Ilia is tied for fifth on the team in points (4), and he netted the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute against VMI. Ilia has played in 16 games and started 12, the most by a freshman for ETSU.

UNCG claimed two of the four individual awards for Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. VMI keeper, Alex Guerra, was given Goalkeeper of the Year, and head coach Doug Allison of Furman was awarded Coach of the Year.

ETSU returns to action on Nov. 13 at 3:30 p.m. to square off against the top seed Spartans at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Winner of this match will play in the SoCon Championship on Nov. 15 against the winner of Mercer/Furman.
