Johnson City, Tenn. (Nov. 14, 2015) – The East Tennessee State University men’s soccer team squares off with Furman on Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium to decide the winner of the Southern Conference men’s soccer tournament.
Championship Game Information
This match will decide the winner of the SoCon Men’s Soccer Tournament and will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. The game will be televised on ESPN3 (link on right) and is set to start at 1 p.m. This is ETSU’s first time being televised on ESPN3 this season.
Tickets for the game are: $8 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, and students with their school ID is free. The berm will be open for fans to use. Seats and towels/blankets are encouraged to bring if sitting on the grass.
After the match, there will be a ceremony for the All-Tournament Team members and the championship trophy for the winning team.
This is ETSU’s and Furman’s third time meeting this year, and both teams have split this year winning and losing one match. The Bucs won the most recent head-to-head match by shutting out Furman 2-0 in Greenville, S.C.
ETSU got on the board first after the Paladin backline surrendered an own goal. Fletcher Ekern (Knoxville, Tenn.) ultimately put the nail in the coffin by scoring on a penalty kick late in the game. In the match that took place in Johnson City, Tenn. this year, Furman netted two goals in the 11th and 83rd minutes. Josiah Baker scored the first goal, and Adrian McInnis found the back of the net later.
The Paladins and Bucs are 2-3-2 in all-time matches.
What it will take to win
Similar to the ETSU-UNCG game in the SoCon Tournament semifinal match on Friday, defense is going to be crucial for both teams. Whoever can prevent the other team from getting open looks on goal will win the game. Furman limits their opponents to just 8.7 shots per game with just 3.3 on goal.
The Paladins have several players who can find the back of the net. Furman has three players tied for first on the team with three goals: Lewis Hawke, Eli Pinner, and Bobby Edet. However, Furman is known for their backline and goalkeeper. Sven Lissek will be between the posts and has started 16 of the 17 games this season. He is currently 33rd in the nation in goals against average with 0.80.
