JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 3, 2016) – Starting SoCon play undefeated, the ETSU men’s soccer team looks to carry its success as it travels to Spartanburg, S.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 4 to square off against Wofford at 7 p.m. at Snyder Field.

About the Bucs

The Bucs continued their defensive success by not allowing a goal in regulation in 649 minutes, which dates back to Aug. 31 against George Mason. Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) has led the surge in the month of September. The sophomore goalkeeper totaled 587:28 minutes between the posts with 23 saves, two goals allowed, 0.31 goals against average and four shutouts in September. In the SoCon, Sutherland is first in shutouts (5), second in goals against average (0.94) and save percentage (.763), and tied for third in total saves (29) this season.

ETSU ranks 16th nationally in shutout percentage (.56), 45th in team goals against average (0.94) and 46th in save percentage (.786).

Against Mercer on Saturday, the Bucs found offensive success by netting two goals. Cameron Woodfin (Old Hickory, Tenn.) netted his third goal of the year, and Serge Gomis (Dakar, Senegal) scored his first goal as a Buccaneer. The two goals against Mercer is the second-highest total for the Blue and Gold this season in a match.

Woodfin has had success at Summers-Taylor Stadium where he has scored all of his goals and tallied three assists this season. He is currently 10th in the NCAA in game-winning goals (3) and 39th in total assists (4).

For the second straight week, the Buccaneers achieved their highest RPI ranking. Announced by the NCAA on Monday, ETSU is ranked 31st in the RPI rankings.

About the Terriers

Wofford in 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the SoCon this season. The Terriers are 4-1 on their home turf, and they have outscored (19-11) and out-shot (113-102) the opposition this year. Wofford started its season red-hot going 3-0 with wins over Presbyterian, Davidson and Gardner-Webb. In the last six games, the Terriers are 3-3 including a 6-1 win over VMI and a 2-0 loss versus Mercer.

ETSU leads the all-time series 4-2-2 against Wofford and have gone 2-2 in Spartanburg. At Snyder Field, the Bucs have taken two matches into overtime are 1-1 in those games. The most recent matchup was in Johnson City in 2015, and the Bucs downed the Terriers 5-0 in the SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals.

Scouting Wofford

Wofford has six goal scorers that have netted at least two goals this season. Matthew Aurednik leads the team and is tied for third in the SoCon in goals scored (4). The senior forward leads the team with 20 total shots with ten on goal. Connor Donohue leads Wofford with three assists and is one of five players to start all nine games. Johnson City native and Science Hill High school graduate, Lucas Altman, has appeared in nine matches with four starts as a freshman. He has totaled 527 minutes and tallied one assist in the 2-1 win over Gardner-Webb.

Returning senior goalkeeper, Garrett Closs, has started the bulk of the matches (6) and owns a 4-2 record with one shutout. He has faced 70 shots and has made 20 saves. He has allowed seven goals and totes a 1.12 goals against average, which is 4th in the conference.
