ETSU looks to extend win streak at VMI
ETSU looks to extend win streak at VMI
Monday, October 17, 2016

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 17, 2016) – The ETSU men’s soccer team is currently on a season long three-game winning streak and looks to extend that streak on Tuesday with a Southern Conference road matchup at VMI. Match is set for 4 p.m.

About the Bucs

After picking up a win at home against Wofford on Saturday, the Bucs are sitting in first place in the SoCon with four conference games remaining. ETSU is 4-1-1 in the conference and are 4-1 in the last five matchups. With a two-win week last week – over VMI and Wofford at home – the Buccaneers’ RPI (rating percentage index) moved to 35th, which is still the highest in the SoCon.

ETSU has been successful on both sides of the ball in the last six games. Defensively, ETSU has allowed just five goals against SoCon foes – 0.79 goals against average - including two own goals. In conference matches, Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) is first in the SoCon in save percentage (.833) and shutouts (3) and third in saves per game (4.17) and total saves (25).

On the offensive side, the Bucs have had multi-goal matches in the last three games, which is the longest streak since last season. In that stretch, Fletcher Ekern (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the surge with five goals including the first-ever hat trick in ETSU program history at UNCG on Oct. 8. Also, Cameron Woodfin (Old Hickory, Tenn.) tallied three assists in that span and extended his assist home streak to five games as ETSU moved to 7-0 when he scores a goal or records an assist. However, the Blue and Gold have spread the offense around in the last three games. Javier Alberto (Johnson City, Tenn.), Jeff George (Safety Harbor, Fla.), Serge Gomis (Dakar, Senegal) and Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) each netted a goal in the span, and Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England), Mitchell Cecatiello (Pascagoula, Miss.), George, Ramalho and Woodfin each tallied at least one assist in the stretch.

About the Keydets

VMI nearly ended its 44-game losing streak on Saturday in Greenville, S.C. as the Keydets and Paladins were tied 2-2 going in the 81st minute. However, Furman’s forward Lewis Hawke scored the game-winning goal with nine minutes remaining in regulation to secure the 3-2 victory. The 3-2 VMI loss was the smallest margin of defeat since last year’s 2-1 loss at Mercer on Oct. 24.

The Keydets are 0-12 overall and 0-6 in the SoCon this season. ETSU is 7-0 all-time against VMI and is a perfect 3-0 at Patchin Field.

Scouting VMI

In the near upset at Furman, Tyler Colgan and Grant Austin scored goals for the Keydets, with Colgan assisting Austin on the second game-tying goal of the match. The SoCon leader in total saves, Robert Allen, made seven saves against the Paladins and faced 22 total shots.

Allen has started nine games and sports a 3.71 goals against average and a .644 save percentage with 777 minutes between the posts.

Colgan, who has started four games and played in nine matches, is tied for the most goals on VMI (2) and leads the team in points (5). Sam Moffatt has started nearly every game and also has two goals. He also leads the Keydet squad with shots attempted (11).
