JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2016) – In its final home match of the 2016 season, the ETSU men’s soccer team looks to remain undefeated at home and to pick up its tenth win of the season on Tuesday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium versus UNCG.
About the Bucs
With ETSU tying Furman on Saturday, Mercer leapt into first place in the Southern Conference and holds a one point lead over ETSU. However, the Bucs can jump the Bears Tuesday with a win and Mercer falling at Furman. The match Tuesday is pivotal for both ETSU and UNCG with just two games remaining on both team’s schedules.
The Bucs played a tough Furman team at home on Saturday in which the game ended in a scoreless tie for the second time of the season between the two teams. ETSU out-shot the Paladins at home and had multiple chances to net the go-ahead goal, but the Furman defense stayed strong to preserve the tie.
On a national level, Cameron Woodfin (Old Hickory, Tenn.) is tied for second in the country in total assists with nine and is third in the nation in assists per game with 0.60. Woodfin and Fletcher Ekern (Knoxville, Tenn.) are tied for 27th in game-winning goals with three eac, and Ekern is 36th nationally in total goals scored (8).
On the defensive side, Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) has totaled the 29th-most goalie minutes played with 1427 minutes and is 60th with a 0.95 goals against average, which is the best in the SoCon. The sophomore goalkeeper picked up his seventh shutout of the season in the scoreless tie with Furman and now has 12 career shutouts.
In the last five matches, ETSU has gone 4-0-1 including going 2-0-1 on its home turf. In the five-game span, ETSU has out-scored the opposition, 14-5. Of the 14 goals scored in the stretch for the Bucs, seven different players have netted at least one goal with Ekern leading the way with seven.
About the Spartans
In the most recent RPI rankings, UNCG is ranked 50th, which is the third-best in the SoCon and seven slots behind SoCon-best, ETSU.
In all-time matches, UNCG holds the narrow 4-3-3 advantage, but ETSU holds the edge in Johnson City, 2-0-2. The Bucs and Spartans have gone to overtime seven times in the ten all-time meetings. In road conference matchups this year, UNCG is 3-1, and in the last four matches, the Spartans are also 3-1.
In their most recent conference match, UNCG fell 1-0 in a tight Southern Conference matchup at home against Wofford. The Spartans out-shot the Terriers at home but found themselves on the losing end as a header off a Wofford corner scored the game-winner towards the end of the match.
On a national level, UNCG is 5th in the country with shots on goal by averaging 7.31 a game and 10th in shots per game (15.69). In the last match versus ETSU, the Spartans fired 17 shots with just three on goal in terrible weather conditions.
As a team, UNCG leads the conference in multiple categories: total points (82), total goals (28), total assists (26), shots per game, shots on goal per game, points per game (5.13) and assists per game (1.63).
Individually, the Spartans have multiple threats to score, but none bigger than Damieon Thomas. In the last head-to-head matchup, ETSU held him scoreless, but he tallied an assist and led the team in shots (5). Leeroy Maguraushe is another threat for the Spartans. He scored his first goal of the season against the Bucs and has recorded two assists in the previous four games. Overall, UNCG has seven multi-goal scorers on the season with Alexander Lewis being second on the team with three goals.
Defensively, Logan Rohde has been their guy between the posts. He has pitched five shutouts this season with two being in conference play. However, he has allowed at least one goal in the previous five matches for UNCG. On the season, the red-shirt senior has a 1.13 goals against average, which is third in the SoCon. He has totaled 38 saves and 17 goals allowed in the 14 games started.
