JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 28, 2016) – The ETSU men’s soccer team will conclude its regular season in a winner-take-all match at Mercer on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.
A win for the Bucs and ETSU will claim the regular season crown along with the number one overall seed in the Southern Conference Tournament. If Mercer wins or ties, the Bears claim the title and the number one seed.
If ETSU wins the regular season title, it will be the first time in program history for the Bucs.
About the Bucs
Winners of five of the last six matches, the Bucs look to carry that momentum with the title on their mind. The last time the Blue and Gold lost was nearly a month ago, and ETSU is 2-1-1 in SoCon road matches this season.
Nationally, the Buccaneers are in the top-50 in multiple categories: 16th shutout percentage (0.50), 29th in won-lost-tied percentage (0.688), 42nd in save percentage (0.795) and team goals against average (0.88), 46th in total goals (25), 47th in total assists (23) and 50th in total points (73).
Defensively, ETSU has allowed just two goals in the previous five matches. One goal allowed was a penalty kick with the other coming via an own goal. Leading the surge is sophomore goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) along with his backline: Chase Clack (Memphis, Tenn.), Joe Pickering (East Sussex, England), Yera Sissoko (Troyes, France), Ben Holt (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Warren Austin (Kingsport, Tenn.). The defense owns a 0.38 goals against average with a 0.882 save percentage with three shutouts in that span. In all SoCon games, ETSU posts a 0.63 goals against average with a 0.850 save percentage with five shutouts.
Offensively, the Bucs have outscored the opposition 25-15 this season and have different ten goal scorers. Junior forward Fletcher Ekern (Knoxville, Tenn.) leads the team with eight goals. In conference matches, the Blue and Gold have outscored opponents 17-6 and out-shot conference foes 133-100 in the nine games. Helping lead the surge is Cameron Woodfin (Old Hickory, Tenn.) and Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) who have combined for 14 assists on the year. Woodfin is also second on the team with four goals scored, and freshman defender Pickering is third with three goals. In the previous six games, the Bucs have outscored opponents 15-5 and dominated by out-shooting opponents 97-59 with five game-winning goals.
Mercer currently sits atop of the SoCon standings with a narrow one-point lead over the Bucs. Mercer is 12-5 overall and 7-2 in the conference. In the most recent poll, the Bears received a vote in the NSCAA top-25 and sits at 48th in the RPI standings.
The Bears have also been red-hot lately by going 6-1 in the last seven matches. They also had five games in that span where they scored multiple goals.
The Bears are also in the top-50 in multiple categories including: 18th in total goals (29), 21st in total points (85), 26th in total assists (27), 36th in points per game (5), 37th in assists per game (1.59), 40th in scoring offense (1.71) and 45th in teams goals against average (0.93).
Mercer has one of the strongest offenses in the conference and nation, and Will Bagrou leads the team with eight goals. The Bears also have five players with at least two goals with Conner Antley and Max Poore each toting four goals on the year. Antley leads the team with five assists, and Trenton Whitely and Bagrou each have recorded four assists on the season. Jordan Duru has also been firing lately as he was most recently named SoCon Player of the Week where he scored a goal and tallied two assists in a pair of wins last week. As a team, Mercer out-shoots the opposition 226-149, an average of 13.29-8.76 a match.
In net for the Bears is redshirt junior Jeremy Booth. He sports a 1.00 goals against average along with a 0.754 save percentage. He has allowed multiple goals in five games this season with ETSU being one of those teams. In just SoCon games, Booth has tallied three shutouts and sports a 7-2 record. He has made 21 saves in the nine SoCon games and totes a 0.79 goals against average.
