JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 13, 2017) – ETSU men’s soccer head coach Bo Oshoniyi announced the 2017 spring schedule on Monday as the Bucs will play five games at home highlighted by NCAA Tournament runner-up Wake Forest on March 18 and Virginia Tech on April 21 inside Summers-Taylor Stadium at 7 p.m.
The spring schedule, which consists of four home preseason games and the annual alumni game, begins this weekend with a bout with Wake Forest – who appeared in the NCAA Tournament championship this past season.
The Demon Deacons went 19-3-3 last year as they claimed the regular season Atlantic ACC conference title as well as winning the ACC Tournament championship against Clemson. Wake Forest ran through the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament as the team only conceded one goal while scoring a pair of goals in each game over Coastal Carolina, SIU Edwardsville and Virginia Tech. The Demon Deacons advanced to the NCAA championship game, and after full time and two golden-goal periods, they were narrowly upended 5-4 in penalty kicks to back-to-back champion Stanford.
Oshoniyi has a history with Wake Forest as he spent two seasons in Winston-Salem, N.C. where he worked with the Demon Deacons goalkeepers.
Also highlighting the spring schedule is a revenge match against Virginia Tech as the Hokies will travel to Johnson City on April 21 to conclude the ETSU spring schedule. The Bucs seek revenge as they were upended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 1-0 in Blacksburg, Va. in November 2016.
After winning the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Hokies won their next two games over UNC Charlotte and Indiana on the road. However, its season was halted by a 2-0 setback against ACC rival Wake Forest in the quarterfinal round.
Also penciled to play the Buccaneer squad this spring is King and Carson-Newman, and ETSU will host both of these matches. The Bucs will play King on March 28 and Carson-Newman on April 13 at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
All matches except for the annual Alumni Game will start at 7 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium. The Alumni Game kicks off at 4 p.m. on April 1.
