SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 2, 2017) – After a stellar October, ETSU goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) has been named the Southern Conference Athlete of the Month for men’s soccer, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
In eight games, Sutherland locked down the goalmouth with five shutouts and a .912 save percentage for the month. He allowed only three goals in October – giving him a goals against average of 0.35 for the month through 769 minutes. One of the three goals was a penalty kick.
“Jonny has been a rock for us all season,” said ETSU head coach Bo Oshoniyi. “I’m happy he’s getting recognized, and I can’t wait to see what he does in the SoCon tournament.”
Sutherland’s goalkeeping, along with ETSU’s defense, has been instrumental in helping the team achieve its first undefeated finish in regular season conference play. The Bucs finished with a 6-0-4 record and back-to-back regular season conference titles.
For the season, Sutherland has a conference-low 0.76 GAA and a conference-leading 0.811 save percentage. Furthermore, Sutherland has played every minute between the pipes this season.
Sutherland recorded 31 saves in October, bringing his season total to 60. With his 60th save, Sutherland became the only ETSU player to reach 200 career saves. He also broke the ETSU career record against Mercer Oct. 10 by recording his 183rd save to pass Ryan Coulter on the all-time list.
The junior from Chester is also three shutouts and two wins away from tying career program records held by Coulter in each category.
“He’s been consistent for us all year,” Oshoniyi said. “It’s not just the saves, but also the way he handles crosses and manages our backline. Without him, we wouldn’t be where we are.”
Sutherland and his teammates have over a week left to prepare for its semifinal matchup, as the top-seeded Bucs will play Nov. 10 at 3:30 p.m. on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
ETSU will face the winner of No. 4 Mercer and No. 5 Wofford, which will be determined Saturday, Nov. 4 in Macon, Ga.
