SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 14, 2017) – After posting strong performances in the SoCon semifinal against Mercer last Friday, junior midfielder Nick Spielman (Melbourne, Fla.) and junior goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) earned spots on the conference all-tournament team.
“I’m happy to see Jonny and Nick get recognized for their performances in the SoCon tournament,” said ETSU head coach Bo Oshoniyi. “They both had great games against Mercer and were solid for us all season.”
Spielman, who finished the year with three goals and one assist, played all 110 minutes of the double-overtime game against Mercer. While he did not record any stats in the shot column, Oshoniyi said his impact was felt throughout the game with defense and ball control.
“Nick had a solid performance,” Oshoniyi said. “He doesn’t have all the flash, but he’s so valuable as an overall player in the midfield.”
Sutherland, who received the 2017 Southern Conference Goalkeeper of the Year award, picked up four saves in the shutout draw prior to the penalty shootout.
Perhaps the biggest save came in the 88th minute on a penalty kick attempt by Mercer, as Sutherland lunged to his right and made a fingertip save to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime.
“Jonny made a big save for us in that moment,” Oshoniyi said. “It was a great save and helped us get into overtime with some life.”
Sutherland finished the season with 64 saves and nine shutouts over 18 games. He led the conference with a 0.71 goals against average, an .821 save percentage and 0.50 shutouts per game.
