JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 2, 2004) - Sophomore Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) ranks seventh in the ITA Mideast Region as named by the ITA Mideast Regional Committee.
Posada broke into the national rankings earlier with a preseason ranking of 105. He went on to have a strong fall performance, compiling a 10-4 singles record. During this period, Posada became the first Buccaneer to compete in the main draw of an ITA national tournament since Gustavo Gomez in 2000 when he won three qualifying matches to advance to the main draw of the ITA Icy/Hot ITA All-American Tournament. In the main draw, Posada won his first match against No. 14 Alex Slovic from the University of Washington but then fell to No. 60 John Isner.
Posada also saw success in his freshman campaign, as he helped the ETSU squad achieve a prefect 13-0 record in Southern Conference play and their third NCAA team championship appearance in school history.
At the SoCon Men's Tennis Championship he went undefeated and was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Posada was also named the SoCon's Freshman of the Year and was named to the Southern Conference All-Conference first team in both singles and doubles.
His overall record of 27-10 in singles includes a 20-4 record in dual competition playing at the No. 1 and 2 slots for the Bucs. His wins include matches against opponents from No. 54 UT, No. 53 Louisville, and No. 56 Old Dominion as well as individually ranked No. 77 Andrew Hamar of Wake Forest 5-7, 6-4, (13-11).
Posada and the Buccaneer men's tennis team await the start of the regular season on January 21 in Richmond, Va. The men's tennis team finished the 2004 season ranked 68th in the ITA National Team Rankings. Weekly national rankings for individuals and teams will resume on January 11, 2005.
