JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 17, 2008) - The ETSU men's tennis team will look to defend their Atlantic Sun title this weekend during the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at the ETSU Tennis Center. The Bucs (20-3, 10-0), enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the third straight year.
This will be ETSU's third appearance in the A-Sun tournament. The Bucs will look to claim their second consecutive Atlantic Sun conference tournament title. They are set to face No. 8 Belmont on Friday, April 18 at 9 a.m. They dropped the Bruins, 4-0 on March 7. The match will take place at Milligan College.
Should the Bucs advance to the semi-finals they will take on either No. 4 Jacksonville or No. 5 Gardner-Webb. ETSU has already faced both teams this season defeating Jacksonville, 7-0 on March 28 and dropping Gardner Webb, 7-0 on April 5.
During Thursday night's conference banquet five Buccaneers were honored by the A-Sun office. Junior Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year after a 22-5 campaign. Olivares and senior Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) were both named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference First team, while seniors Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) were named to the All-Conference Second Team. Freshman Sergio Velez (Medellin, Colombia) was named an All-Freshman Team selection. Head coach Yaser Zaatini was also honored as the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year.
