Bucs to take on Alabama, Memphis

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Jan. 10, 2013) – The ETSU men’s tennis team gets the spring season underway this weekend, heading to the University of Alabama Tennis Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Friday for the two-day Crimson Tide Indoor Invite.
ETSU – ranked No. 71 by the ITA – will take on a pair of ranked opponents over the course of the weekend. Friday, the Buccaneers get the tournament started with a doubles session against No. 33 Memphis around 3 p.m., followed by a singles matchup against No. 53 Alabama. On Saturday, ETSU and Alabama play each other in doubles at approximately 11 a.m.., before the Bucs close out play with singles against Memphis around noon. All matches will not count toward dual records, and all times listed are Eastern Time.
The Buccaneers will send seven to compete against the two nationally ranked squads. One of the seven is senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela), who is ranked No. 19 in singles by the ITA in the Ohio Valley region. The 2012 Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP is also ranked No. 7 in the region in doubles alongside junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain). ETSU also boasts the No. 8 doubles team in the region, consisting of senior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and junior Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela). The other three Buccaneers heading to Tuscaloosa are Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) and Connor Knox (Bristol, Tenn.).
Over the fall, ETSU had doubles encounters against both Alabama and Memphis. At the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in October, Memphis’ David O’Leary and Joe Salisbury defeated the duo of Bandres and Ordeig in the quarterfinals, 8-6. Ramirez and Varon met another Tiger duo at the same tournament, defeating Connor Glennon and David O’Hare in the round of 16, 9-8. In ETSU’s final tournament of the fall season, the UGA Bulldog Scramble, Ordeig and Ribeiro took down Alabama’s Stuart Kenyon and Brian Conlon, 8-4.
