Kolovou earns first women’s award, Bandres takes fifth of career
MACON, Ga. (April 3, 2013) – Seniors Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) helped ETSU to a combined 4-0 weekend and were named Atlantic Sun Men’s and Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, as released by the conference on Wednesday.
The Buccaneer men and women each traveled to Florida and came back with two wins. Bandres led the men to a 6-1 defeat of Stetson and 7-0 sweep of Florida Gulf Coast, while Kolovou spearheaded the women to a 7-0 shutout of Stetson and a 5-2 victory over the Eagles.
At 9-4 overall, 4-0 A-Sun, the Lady Bucs are in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Sun standings. The men’s team jumped to 7-6 overall, 3-1 A-Sun, and reentered the ITA Men’s Team Rankings at No. 74.
Bandres had a perfect weekend, defeating Stetson’s Didrik Berg, 6-2, 6-1, and FGCU’s Jordy Vives, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 1 singles. The reigning A-Sun Tournament MVP also won both his doubles sets and is ranked No. 120 in the ITA singles poll. On the year, Bandres is 15-11 overall and 9-3 dual as the Bucs’ No. 1 player.
Kolovou was just as impressive, downing two top singles players in Stetson’s Andrea Crespo, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 (8-6), and FGCU’s Sarah Means, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. The first year Lady Buc improved to 19-9 overall, 11-1 dual, with a 9-1 mark in No. 1 matches. She currently rides a three-match winning streak.
The honors are the fifth of Bandres’ ETSU career and his third of the season. Kolovou’s weekly award is her first.
The Bucs and Lady Bucs are back in action on Friday, taking on Lipscomb from the ETSU Tennis Complex.
