No. 59 Men's Tennis Defeats Davidson, 6-1

Johnson City, Tenn. (Mar. 29, 2002) -- The No. 59-ranked East Tennessee State men's tennis team got back on the winning track by defeating Southern Conference rival Davidson, 6-1, Friday afternoon from Covington Courts in Davidson, N.C. The Bucs won the doubles point after sweeping all three matches. The ETSU team of junior Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and senior Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mexico) defeated the Davidson team of Will Hamilton and Donald Miles at No. 1 singles, 8-4. Junior Pablo Sahagun (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and sophomore Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Mexico) of ETSU were victorious over Wildcats Rob Gould and Chad Winebarger at No. 2 doubles, 9-8. ETSU sophomores Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) defeated Geoffrey Mullen and Bryan Stonestreet of Davidson at No. 3 doubles, 8-3. ETSU kept up their momentum, winning five of six hard-fought singles matches. At No. 1 singles, ETSU's Pavlovich defeated Davidson's Winebarger 1-6, 6-0, 6-3. Fernandez won at No. 2 singles for the Bucs, defeating David Webb of the Wildcats, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, ETSU got another point as Iglesias defeated Davidson's Rob Haywood, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Davidson picked up their first point of the match as Jonathan Britt defeated ETSU's Sahagun at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 6-3. The Bucs won the point at No. 5 singles as Salazar was victorious over Davidson's Miles, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. Serrano closed out the match with a win for the Bucs over Davidson's Mullen, 7-5, 7-6. The win runs ETSU's record to 8-6 on the season, 4-0 in Southern Conference play. Davidson falls to 8-8, 3-3 in conference play. "We got off to a great start today by winning the doubles point," said ETSU head coach Dave Mullins. "From then on, every match was a battle. The team score looks a little lopsided, but we had some tight matches that we were able to pull out by winning the big points. I am proud of the win today, now we have to prepare for tomorrow's match against UNC Charlotte." The Bucs return to action tomorrow against UNC Charlotte at 1 p.m. from Charlotte, N.C.
