Johnson City, Tenn. (April 9, 2003) - East Tennessee State's men's tennis team continued its quest for its sixth regular season Southern Conference title Wednesday, as the Buccaneers defeated Appalachian State by a score of 6-1. ETSU, which played the match in Memorial Center due to rain, improves to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in SoCon, while the Mountaineers even their season record at 10-10 (5-4 SoCon). The Bucs got off to a strong start by sweeping ASU in doubles competition. The tandem of Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) defeated the Mountaineers' Erez Cohen and Doug Ornsby 8-3 at the No. 1 slot. At No. 2 doubles, Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) also won an 8-3 decision over Andrew Taylor and Jason Nius, and the duo of Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Federico Ochoa (Manizales, Colombia) were victors at the No. 3 position against Jacob Stapleton and Alon Cohen, 8-6. In singles action, Appalachian State garnered its lone point when Erez Cohen defeated Pavlovich, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1. Then at No. 2, Ornsby ran into a buzz saw in Salazar, as Salazar won his eighth consecutive match, 6-2, 6-2. ETSU would ride Salazar's momentum down to the final serve. Iglesias snapped a three-match losing streak with his 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alon Cohen at No. 3 singles. While Iglesias may have broke out of a slump on Wednesday, Fiuri remained undefeated in SoCon action (8-0) after knocking off the Mountaineers' Taylor 6-2, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. In the fifth position, Serrano defeated Stapleton by a score of 6-2, 6-1, and Ochoa improved his SoCon singles record to 3-0 when he claimed victory over Derrick Boone, 6-1, 6-2. East Tennessee State will host Chattanooga on April 11 in the regular season finale before heading to the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Championships, which will take place April 16-19.
