Men's Tennis wins fifth straight match with 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern

Johnson City, Tenn. (April 6, 2003) - East Tennessee State's men's tennis team improved to 11-6 this spring and 5-1 in the Southern Conference with a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern at the ETSU Tennis Center Sunday. The Buccaneers, who have won five matches in a row and nine of their last 10, garnered all of their team points in singles action. At the No. 1 spot, Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) defeated his opponent Danie Van Den Heever in straight sets, as did Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru), who knocked off Mark Finnegan at No. 2 singles. Pavlovich garnered a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Van Den Heever, while Salazar defeated Finnegan 6-1, 6-4. Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) lost to Georgia Southern's Noah Tyler, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) improved his SoCon record to 6-0 with a victory over Uli Ebensperger at the fourth flight, 6-3, 6-1. Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia), who has struggled somewhat against conference competition lost a tough match to the Eagles' Vincent Patry 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Federico Ochoa (Manizales, Colombia) took advantage of his first conference singles match by defeating Stephen Dubienski in three sets 7-5, 7-6, 6-1, at the No. 6 slot. Georgia Southern earned a pair of wins in doubles competition, picking up victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Van Den Heever and Patry won 8-6 over Iglesias and Serrano at the second flight, while Ebensperger and Tyler downed Fiuri and Ochoa at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. At the No. 1 position, Pavlovich and Salazar teamed up for their third straight win, 8-6, over Finnegan and Lasha Janashia. East Tennessee State will be in action again on Monday, April 7, when the Buccaneers will take on the visiting Terriers of Wofford College.
