Johnson City, Tenn. (Mar 14, 2003) - East Tennessee State's men's tennis team won its third match in a row by shutting out Toledo 7-0 at the ETSU Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The Buccaneers (5-5) started out strong by sweeping the Rockets in doubles action. ETSU's No. 1 tandem of Marcos Pavlovich (Otamendi, Argentina) and Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) defeated Khalid Al Nabhani and Tony Tran 8-6. Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) handed Toledo's Todd Wojtkowski and Mirsad Begic an 8-4 loss at the No. 2 position, and at No. 3 doubles, Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Federico Ochoa (Manizales, Colombia) pulled off an 8-4 victory over Freddy Gomez and Zach Barden. "I think the doubles matches really set the pace for the rest of the day," said ETSU head coach Yaser Zaatini. "I still think we can put together a better performance playing wise, but we were definitely happy with the victory." In singles action, Pavlovich took Al Nabhani three sets before the senior was able to oust his opponent 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. Serrano also went three sets before defeating Gomez 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 at the No. 5 position. At No. 2, Salazar knocked off Tran, 6-2, 6-1. Iglesias was victorious over Wojtkowski, 6-1, 6-3. Fiuri toppled Mirsad Begic 6-2, 6-0, while ETSU's Francisco Diaz (Weston, Fla.) defeated Barden 6-2, 6-1. The Buccaneers' next match will be versus Charleston Southern on Thursday, Mar. 20 in preparation for this weekend's Southern Conference opener against The Citadel on Mar. 21 and College of Charleston on Mar. 22. "This weekend will be a test as we get set to begin our conference schedule," Zaatini said. "The Citadel and College of Charleston are both pretty tough, and we better be ready to play."
