Chapel Hill, N.C. (October 23, 2002) - East Tennessee State Junior Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and sophomore Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) were defeated in the qualifying round of the 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships played at the University of North Carolina Wednesday. Iglesias won his first match of the day in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6(10), over Niklas Oskarrsson of Old Dominion before being defeated by Virginia's Mike Duquette 6-1, 7-5. Serrano fell victim to Clemson's John Boetsch 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. The tournament's qualifying rounds, held Wednesday, Oct. 23 and Thursday, Oct. 24, feed into a main draw where the singles finalists and doubles champions earn a spot in the Nov. 7-10 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas. Fellow Buccaneer Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru), who received an automatic bid to the main draw tournament, will play Friday, Oct. 25 at 8 a.m. versus Georgia Tech's Roger Anderson. Anderson, the Yellow Jackets' No. 1 singles player, captured the singles title at this tournament last year. Salazar is also in the main draw doubles where he will team up with Iglesias. Doubles draws have not yet been published. The 2002 Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships is the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament and is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season.
