GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 7, 2004) - The No. 69 East Tennessee State men's tennis team downed Furman Wednesday afternoon by a score of 5-2 at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. With the win, ETSU remains perfect in SoCon play with a 6-0 record and improves to a 13-5 overall record, while Furman fell to 10-11 overall and 6-1 SoCon with the loss. Furman took the early lead with the doubles portion of the match winning two out of three matches, but wouldn't be able to maintain that lead for long. Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moisés Serrano (Bucaramanga, Columbia), playing at the No. 2 position, garnered the only doubles victory for the Bucs in an 8-6 decision over Brian Crook and Allen Simmons. At No.1 Furman's John Chesworth and Patrick Fillnow won in a tiebreaker over Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) and Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) 9-8(5) and the Paladin's Greg Maarschalk and Ben Pauluhn downed Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Felix Insaurralde's (Asunción, Paraguay) 8-4 in the No. 3 slot to secure the point. East Tennessee State went on to win five out of the six singles matches to secure the victory from Posada at No. 2 (7-6, 6-3), Iglesias at No. 3 (2-6, 7-6, 6-3, Fiuri at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2), Serrano at No. 5 (7-6, 6-4), and Insaurralde at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4). Furman picked up their only singles match at No.1 with Chesworth defeating Salazar 6-3, 7-6(1). The Buccaneers travel to Chattanooga on Saturday, April 10 for a match before they return for a home contest on Monday, April 12 against Davidson. No. 69 East Tennessee State 5, Wofford 2 Doubles 1.
