SPARTAN BURG, S.C. (April 5, 2004) - The No. 65 East Tennessee State men's tennis team defeated Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. this afternoon, 6-1. ETSU remains perfect in SoCon play with a 5-0 record and boast a 12-5 overall record while Wofford fell to 1-7, 7-10 with the loss. The Bucs won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. The pair of Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) and Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) defeated Kent Ball and Brett Johnson 8-5 at No.1. Playing in the No. 3 position ETSU's Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Felix Insaurralde's (Asunción, Paraguay) reached a 9-7 decision against Alec Wilson and Jason Mengel. Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moisés Serrano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) fell in their match against Chris Barlow and Brandon Smith 8-4. In singles action, the Bucs claimed five of the six singles points. At the No. 4 position, Fiuri battle with Barlow to a third set, and was able to walk away with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win for the Bucs. The Bucs also earned wins from Posada at No. 1 (6-1, 6-3), Salazar at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1), Iglesias (6-3, 6-2), and Insaurralde at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0) Wofford's lone point came from senior co-captain Smith, who remained undefeated in Southern Conference action. Smith handed Serrano a 6-4, 6-2 defeat at the No. 5 slot to improve his league record to 8-0 and overall mark to a team-best 14-3 this season.
