Bucs Continue Success at USC Fall Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 18, 2003) - The East Tennessee State men's tennis team advanced four singles players to semifinals play in the second day of competition at the USC Fall Invitational held in Columbia, S.C. In the singles A bracket, Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) defeated Brandon Johnson of Radford 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 and Rob Cassidy of 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to advance. Both Moises Serrano ( Bucaramanga, Columbia) and Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) will compete in the semifinals of the A/B bracket. Serrano won his first match Saturday 6-2, 6-3 against Attila Janoscdeak, and his second against Rob Cassidy of USC 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Fiuri defeated Wofford's Alec Wilson 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16 and UNC's Jonathan Janda 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Advancing from the B-1 bracket is Frederico Ochoa (Manizales, Columbia), who faced College of Charleston opponent Jose Netto and won 6-0, 6-2. In quarterfinals, Ochoa defeated Andrew Watkins of UNC 7-5, 6-3 to advance in the tournament. The lone player eliminated from the tournament was Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru), who was also the only ETSU singles player seeded in the tournament. He fell to Wake Forest's Brett Ross 7-6 (2), 6-1 in the round of 16. The USC Invitational action continues tomorrow morning.
