Men's tennis defeats SoCon rival Furman, 6-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 23, 2005) - The East Tennessee State men's tennis team defeated longtime Southern Conference rival the Furman Paladins in a thrilling 6-1 match Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Center. The Bucs are now 10-3 overall, 4-0 in the SoCon with their eighth straight win, while the Paladins are dealt their first SoCon loss and fall to 7-11, 2-1.
"It's a great victory and accomplishment to beat at team like Furman. The rivalry between the two teams is always thrilling," stated Head Coach Yaser Zaatini. "I was impressed with the team today and very satisfied with our doubles play."
ETSU swept all three matches at doubles for the point. Moisés Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Sebastian Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) started the Bucs with an 8-6 win over Scott Kahler and Kevin Lackey. Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) and Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) then clinched the point at No. 1 defeating Allen Simmons and Andy Sobczyk, 8-6. ETSU then finished up doubles play with a win at No. 2 from Felix Insaurralde (Asunción, Paraguay) and Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) over Greg Maarschalk and Ben Pauluhn also by a score of 8-6.
In singles action, the Bucs took five of the six singles points. Insaurralde finished first at No. 3 defeating Brennen Phippen (6-0, 6-1). The Paladins' Pauluhn then won their lone point of the match at No. 2 over ETSU's Fiuri (6-4, 6-2). Moisés Serrano then gave ETSU a 3-1 advantage in the match with a win at No. 4 (7-5, 6-2) and his brother Sebastian Serrano clinched the winning point at No. 6 (6-4, 7-5). The remaining two matches would be extended to third sets, but ETSU would take the victory at No. 5 from Picardo (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) and from Posada at No. 1 (6-7, 6-1, 6-3) for the 6-1 final.
Both teams continue Southern Conference action with the Bucs playing host Appalachian State this Friday, March 25 at 2:30 p.m., while Furman travels to face Chattanooga next Wed. March 30 at 2:00 p.m.
