ETSU men's tennis falls to No. 53 Drake, 5-2

LINCOLN, Neb. (March 10, 2007) - The No. 48 ETSU men's tennis team fell to the No. 53 Drake Bulldogs today, at the Nebraska Tennis Center in Knoxville. ETSU falls to 13-4 on the year while Drake improves to 11-2.

 

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they took the doubles point. Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) defeated Guilherme Marsiglia and Bokang Setshogo, 8-2 in the No. 2 position while in the third position Felix Insaurralde (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) fell to Sergi Vila and Ivan Mendoza, 8-6. The doubles were decided when Travis Sandlant (Werribee, Australia) and Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) fell in a close 9-8 match to Maor Zirkin and Dalibor Pavic in the No. 1 position.

 

The Bucs fought hard as they were able to take matches to three sets in several positions. Serrano tied the match at 1-1 cruising past Guilherme Marsiglia, 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth slot. But the Bulldogs were able to regain a 3-1 lead and clinch the match when Olivares fell to Maor Zirkin, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 position and Ahlgren fell to Ivan Mendoza, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.

 

Drake then took a 4-1 lead as Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) fell to Sergi Vila, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot. ETSU then picked up it's second point at Picardo defeated Bokang Setshogo, 7-5, 7-5 in the fifth position, while Insaurralde fell to Dalibor Pavic, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 position.

 

"I just really want to commend my team for a great effort. We have had a small injury, but there is no defeat we can't get over. We fought very hard," said head coach Yaser Zaatini. "We showed a lot of courage playing a lot of tough teams on the road. Going 4-1 on the road proves that we can take any one, any where, any time and under any conditions. I'm really proud of the guys for their effort."
