No. 39th Bucs take seven out of eight singles matches against No. 20th North Carolina

DURHAM, N.C. (Jan. 17, 2009) - Facing a tough early measuring stick the ETSU men's tennis team opened its 2009 season with a bang winning eight out of 12 matches against No. 20 North Carolina Saturday, at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.

The No.39th ranked Bucs opened Day One by winning seven of its eight singles matches, while picking up one doubles victory.

"Carolina is a well coached team that has a lot of talent," said head coach Yaser Zaatini. "Even though our team had some problems early in doubles, I was real proud of every player in how they put that behind them and played well the rest of the afternoon. Any time you play a top-20 opponent like North Carolina you have to have a great team effort and I thought we had that today."

Leading the way for the Bucs in singles action was freshman Charles Bottoni (Bois Guillaume, France) and Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia) who currently sit in second and third place among tournament players with nine and eight points, respectively.

Also picking up wins for the Bucs in singles play was sophomore Matej Zlatkovic (Ljubljana, Slovenia), freshman Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium), senior Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden), junior Daniel Isaza (Medline, Colombia) and freshman Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden). Ironically, No.9th ranked senior Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) dropped his first match of the season to No.73 Clay Donato, 6-3, 7-5.

"I thought we played awesome in singles today," said Zaatini. "Ever since our players have come back from winter break they've all worked hard in getting ready for this season. In college tennis it's so important that you play together as a whole team and despite Enrique losing I saw every guy cheering and rallying each other throughout the rest of the matches."

In doubles action the Bucs duo of Asker and Isaza railed to drop the Carolina team of Kyle Baker and Rafiee, 9-8, for ETSU only doubles victory.

"In doubles today we started a little slower then I would have liked," said Zaatini. "If you look at the scores in doubles most of the matches were close and our team was within a couple of points. Early in a season doubles seem to take a little longer to get at the level that our guys can compete out."
