WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2010) - After a week layoff the 60th-ranked ETSU men's tennis team returns to action this weekend with a 12 p.m., contest Saturday at No. 16 Wake Forest. The Bucs and Demon Deacons will square off inside the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Saturday's contest will be the first for ETSU (2-4) since the Bucs completed their longest road trip in school history early this month in Seattle, Washington. ETSU dropped both its matches out in the Great Northwest Shootout, as the Bucs fell to No.58 Mississippi State 5-2 and host and No. 25 Washington, 4-3.
Despite its two losses on the Pacific coast ETSU has played one of the toughest schedules in the country this season. The Bucs have faced five ranked opponents - all on the road - including matches at No.11 Louisville and No. 2 Tennessee.
Individually, junior Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia) leads the Bucs with a 5-3 record in singles. Teraz - who was ranked 82nd in the country before this week - has won back-to-back singles contests at the No. 1 position.
Overall, ETSU looks to continue its trend of having a great individual performance against the Demon Deacons. This month ETSU leads the Atlantic Sun Conference with two "Player of the Week" award winners. Sophomore Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) won the first February 3, while Teraz picked up the second a week later, February 10.
Wake Forest (3-1) welcomes the Bucs after winning two straight road contests against William and Mary and VCU. The Demon Deacons also had a victory against No. 31 Minnesota early this spring.
Individually, freshman Tripper Carleton and junior Iain Atkinson lead the way for Wake. Carleton currently is ranked 74th by the ITA in singles, while Atkinson sits at 117th.
Saturday's match will be the second time that ETSU has Wake Forest has met in men's tennis. Wake defeated the Bucs in a thrilling 4-3 contest in Myrtle Beach, S.C. last season. In that match, ETSU had a chance to win with three-straight match points; however the Demon Deacons rallied late in the third-set tiebreaker for the comeback win.
