Men's tennis returns to action at No. 11 Georgia on Wednesday

Tuesday, February 08, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 8, 2011) - After opening the season with one of the most difficult schedules in the country, the road does not get any easier for the ETSU men's tennis team as they hit the road and take on No. 11 Georgia, Wednesday afternoon at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility.
The Bucs enter the mid-week clash at 1-3 on the season following a 7-0 sweep at the hand of top-ranked Virginia on Jan. 29. Each ETSU opponent thus far has been ranked nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Bucs' lone win of the season was a 6-1 decision over 50th-ranked Binghamton on Jan. 28.
Despite the 1-3 overall record to start the season, the Bucs have moved up two spots to No. 49 in the ITA rankings. ETSU junior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) also remains at No. 73 in the national singles rankings. Bandres leads the team with 10 singles wins on the season.
Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) and Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) have been solid for the Bucs in doubles action. The duo has earned two straight victories at the No. 3 position. Those two wins were against top-ranked Virginia and No. 50 Binghamton.
Georgia enters the match with a 4-1 record overall; however, the Bulldogs are coming off a loss to No. 4 Ohio State over the weekend. The Bulldogs are 4-0 at home which includes wins against No. 53 Clemson, No. 55 Oklahoma State, No. 20 North Carolina and No. 60 USC Upstate.
Georgia senior Javier Garrapiz leads a handful of Bulldogs ranked in the ITA singles rankings at No. 13, followed by teammates Sadio Doumbia (No. 47), Wil Spencer (No. 53), and Hernus Pieters (No. 119).
Georgia also has two teams ranked in doubles; with Garrapiz and Pieters sitting at No. 14 and the pairing of Doumbia and junior Ignacio Taboada ranked No. 23.
Georgia is 5-0 all-time against the Bucs and includes a 7-0 victory last season.
Following the Georgia match, the Bucs will return to Tennessee and take on Appalachian State, Saturday afternoon. The match will take place at the Bristol Tennis Center and is set for 10:30 a.m.
