MACON, Ga. (Mar. 2, 2011) - ETSU sophomore Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) has been named Atlantic Sun men's tennis player of the week after leading the Bucs to a conference opening victory over USC Upstate this past weekend, the league office announced today.

Bandres earned victories in both singles and doubles play against the Spartans last weekend, including the clinching singles victory for the Bucs at No. 2 singles.

In doubles play, Bandres teamed with Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) to earn an 8-3 victory over the USC Upstate duo of Gonzalo Blanco and Edgar Rodriguez, at the No. 2 position to help the Bucs earn the crucial doubles point.

With the match tied at 3-3,
the final match in progress was at the No. 2 singles position. After winning the opening set against Ramiro Blanco, No. 112-ranked Bandres dropped the second set to force a pivotal third set. Blanco got out on top and was serving for the match, but Bandres won an exciting point to extend the match. From there, Bandres gained the momentum and took the final set, 7-5, to give the Bucs the victory. Bandres won the match, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.

For the spring season, Bandres owns a 3-5 overall singles record and a perfect 1-0 mark in A-Sun play. In doubles, Bandres and Gille are 4-4 overall and a perfect 1-0 in league play. Bandres led the Bucs with nine wins during the fall tournament season.

The player of the week honor was the first for Bandres and the first for the men's tennis team this season. The last player of the week award for the Bucs came on March 10 of last year as Grega Teraz earned the weekly honor.

The Bucs return to action on Friday and Saturday as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on North Florida and Jacksonville in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The match against UNF will begin at 2 p.m., while Saturday's match against JU will also take place at 2 p.m.
