Bandres earns his second A-Sun player of the week honor
Bandres Wednesday, March 30, 2011 MACON, Ga. (Mar. 30, 2011) - Following a perfect week at both singles and doubles and helping lead the Bucs to a 3-0 week, sophomore Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) has been named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Bandres went a perfect 3-0 in singles play, while also teaming with Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) to go 2-0 in doubles play.
To open the week, Bandres defeated Matthew Rock of Florida Gulf Coast, helping the Bucs defeat the Eagles, 7-0. On Saturday, Bandres teamed with Gille to knock off Chris Swanteson and Njal Stene of Stetson, 8-4, at the No. 2 position. Then, he defeated Didrik Berg in singles play, 6-1, 6-3. The Bucs went on to beat Stetson, 6-1.
On Tuesday, Bandres and Gille defeated Fernando Guillen and David Clavera of Campbell, 8-4. Later, Bandres rolled past Guillen in singles play, 6-1, 6-3, helping the Bucs defeat the Camels, 5-2. ETSU is now atop the A-Sun standings, a half game ahead of UNF with two regular season conference matches to play.
For the spring season, Bandres owns an 11-7 overall singles record and a 7-1 mark in A-Sun play. He and Gille own a solid 13-5 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark, while playing primarily at the No. 2 position. The duo has won nine straight contests.
Bandres earned player of the week honors on March 2 after picking up a doubles victory against USC Upstate and later helped the Bucs clinch the match against the Spartans by defeating Ramiro Blanco.
The Bucs close out A-Sun regular season play on Friday and Saturday as they travel to Kennesaw State and Mercer.
