Five-time defending A-Sun champs begin conference action
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 15, 2012) – After a 19-day layoff from its last match, the ETSU men’s tennis team returns to action this weekend when it begins the Atlantic Sun portion of the schedule against Jacksonville and North Florida.
The Bucs head to the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex on Friday to take on Jacksonville, before heading 11 miles across town for a Saturday meeting with North Florida. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 10 a.m.
ETSU (2-8) last played on Feb. 26 when it hosted Tennessee Tech and defeated the Golden Eagles 6-1. It was the Bucs’ second-consecutive victory after taking down Appalachian State by the same score the day before. The weekend sweep got ETSU its first two wins of the season after starting the year 0-8 in matches which included five ITA-ranked opponents – Tulsa, NC State, Georgia, Drake and Nebraska.
Following the Bucs’ bounce back against Appalachian State and Tennessee Tech, senior Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week. In ETSU’s two wins, Akser posted a 2-0 record in both singles and doubles play to improve his overall singles record to 7-6 and 3-2 this spring. Akser is also 3-1 in No. 1 doubles play since teaming with fellow classmate Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) back on Feb. 11 against Denver.
Also on a two-match singles winning streak are Gille, Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Sophomore Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) is on the longest active winning streak, having reeled off his last three matches all in straight sets.
Jacksonville (2-9) has lost its last seven matches. The Dolphins began the slide with a 7-0 loss to FAU on Feb. 19, and have since lost to Florida A&M, Campbell, Eastern Kentucky, Troy State, Appalachian State and South Alabama. JU’s last win came on Feb. 18 in a 6-0 decision against Hampton.
North Florida (9-4) is on an impressive four-match winning streak which includes wins over then-No. 42 South Alabama and then-No. 33 UNC Wilmington in its last two matches. The Ospreys’ other two wins on the streak came 4-3 against Florida A&M and 7-0 against Troy.
Moritz Buerchner leads the Ospreys through the 2012 spring season. The junior boasts a 9-4 singles record – all of his matches coming at the No. 1 position – and has won each of his last four matches. Also riding a four-match winning streak for UNF are Leonardo Nahar and Beauregard Treyz.
The Ospreys were the only blemish on ETSU’s conference record last year, defeating the Bucs 5-2 on March 4 in Jacksonville. In the Bucs meeting with JU the following day, ETSU defeated the Dolphins 7-0 before going on to win out the rest of the conference schedule and earn its fifth-consecutive A-Sun Tournament Championship title.
