ETSU starts A-Sun play 2-0 thanks to senior’s clutch performance

MACON, Ga. (March 21, 2012) – Going 2-0 in both singles and doubles play in the opening weekend of Atlantic Sun action, senior Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) was named A-Sun Player of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career, the league office announced on Wednesday.

Bonnevalle is the third honoree from ETSU this season as he joins fellow classmates Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) and Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) on the 2012 list. Akser was honored on Feb. 29 while Gille was named Player of the Week two weeks earlier on Feb. 15.

Bonnevalle played a flawless week of tennis in helping ETSU to a 2-0 start in A-Sun play. The senior Belgian went 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles play to combine for a perfect 4-0 week, which included saving a match point with ETSU down 3-2 to North Florida en route to a 4-3 ETSU win.

On Friday in the Bucs' A-Sun opener against Jacksonville, Bonnevalle defeated Eduardo Martinez at No. 4 singles after having dropped the first set 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). Bonnevalle also teamed with Juan Ramirez at No. 2 doubles and defeated Fernando Bano Lopez and Jose Fantova 8-6, as the Bucs swept JU 7-0.

On Saturday against North Florida, Bonnevalle helped ETSU exact last year's regular season loss to the Ospreys in Jacksonville. With ETSU trailing 3-2 in the match and Bonnevalle down match point at No. 4 singles, the senior saved the Bucs from defeat with a thrilling 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win against Pedro Davisson, before Gille finished the comeback with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win against Daniel Sotomarino. Earlier that day, Bonnevalle and Ramirez got the only doubles win against UNF by defeating Moritz Buerchner and Beauregard Treyz 8-2, in the No. 2 match.

With his two singles victories this past weekend, Bonenvalle has now won five matches in a row -- the longest active streak on the team. -- and is 12-10 through the 2011-12 season, 6-5 dual. Bonnevalle and Ramirez also hold the longest active ETSU doubles winning streak, having won three matches in a row.
