ETSU freshman earns first weekly award of ETSU career; completes A-Sun singles play 9-0

MACON, Ga. (April 17, 2012) – Capping off his perfect A-Sun season with a 9-0 singles record in ETSU’s 5-2 defeat of USC Upstate last weekend, freshman Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Ribeiro helped ETSU to its first undefeated A-Sun season since 2009, completing his flawless individual conference season with a 9-0 singles mark. In ETSU's win over USC Upstate, the freshman took down Tyler Grove at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-1, finishing off his freshman year undefeated in A-Sun play and extending his team-leading winning streak to 11 in a row. Ribeiro also played a perfect set at No. 3 doubles with Jesus Bandres, defeating Gonzalo Blanco and Jacob Darling 8-0.

The Sao Paulo, Brazil native wraps up the regular season with a 20-8 overall singles record, 11-1 dual, 9-0 A-Sun. He went 2-0 at No. 4, 7-1 at No. 5 and 2-0 at No. 6. The first year standout also posted a doubles record which reads 10-8 overall, 6-4 dual, 5-1 A-Sun, as he ends the regular season on a five-match doubles winning streak.

The Player of the Week recognition is the first of Ribeiro’s collegiate career, and ETSU’s fifth such honors of the season, tying North Florida for the most of any A-Sun school. Senior Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) was recognized the weeks of Feb. 15 and March 28, senior Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) the week of March 21 and senior Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) the week of Feb. 29.

Ribeiro and the ETSU men’s tennis team now enter the A-Sun Championships as the No. 1 seed looking for their sixth-consecutive title as they await the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal matchup between No. 4 Lipscomb (9-11, 4-5 A-Sun) and No. 5 USC Upstate (11-9, 4-5 A-Sun). First serve for Saturday’s semifinal action is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
