RICHMOND, Ky. (Jan. 28, 2011) - For the second straight match the ETSU women's tennis team swept through both singles and doubles play as the Bucs rolled past Eastern Kentucky, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
"Overall I was happy with the victory today especially with the tough conditions we were faced with," said ETSU women's tennis assistant coach Travis Sandlant. "I thought the team really gave a good effort today."
The Bucs opened up play by earning the doubles point after taking all three matches. At No. 1, the doubles duo of Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) quickly defeated Jessica Albuquerque, 8-1. ETSU clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 position when Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) knocked off Anouk Faure and Sophie O'Neill, 8-6. Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) and Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) also earned a victory for the Bucs at No. 3 as they dropped Myriem Mhirit and Milena Poffo, 8-5.
The Bucs kept the momentum rolling into singles action as they won all six singles matches. Jaime quickly defeated Albuquerque, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4, Kedzo won in straight sets over Mhirit, 6-1, 6-2.
"Karina had a lot of confidence today as she really hit the ball well," said Sandlant. "It was good to see her get into a bit of a groove."
The Bucs clinched the match at the No. 3 position as Wieliczko defeated Faure in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Wieliczko has now started the season with two straight set singles victories. ETSU also got victories from Holtzhausen, Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania), and Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) to close out the match.
The Bucs improve their record to 2-0 on the season, while Eastern Kentucky opens the year with an 0-1 mark."We are looking forward to playing Wake Forest on Sunday and seeing where we are at and what we need to work on," added Sandlant. "Hopefully we can go there and put in a good effort and come away with a win."
The Bucs travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday to face No. 52 ranked Wake Forest beginning at 12 p.m. It will mark the first ranked opponent of the year for ETSU after they finished 2010 with three victories over ranked opponents.
