Bucs' valiant effort falls short against ranked UNC-Wilmington
Saturday, February 22, 2014
WILMINGTON, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2014) - Despite taking four singles matches to decisive third sets, the ETSU men's tennis team fell on the road Saturday to No. 51 UNC-Wilmington, 6-1.
After losing the day's double point handily, the outlook for ETSU's chances to upset ranked UNCW looked bleak; however, the Buccaneers (3-8) responded well, battling the Seahawks (4-3) valiantly in singles play.
"We started the doubles in terrible fashion," ETSU head coach Yaser Zaatini said. "I thought it was going to be a long, miserable day. Despite the loss, I think we played great singles."
Four of ETSU's singles players extended their matches to three sets, with Sebastian Yllera and Conner Huertas Del Pino each losing narrowly in third-set tie-breakers.
"The guys fought hard," Zaatini said. "Every match was contested and truly we could have won this match. I believe we played extremely well."
Freshmen David Biosca and Ismael Merino each lost in three sets, while senior Roger Ordeig picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
"I'm proud of these guys," Zaatini said. "I am demanding the same effort tomorrow."
ETSU will take on No. 46 Elon Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
