CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Oct. 5, 2013) – The ETSU men’s tennis team continued its winning weekend at the UVa Fall Classic Saturday, with the Buccaneers winning a doubles flight title in addition to sending three players to singles flight finals.
In doubles action, the duo of David Biosca and Roger Ordeig came away victorious in the Orange Doubles flight, beating William & Mary’s Ben Guthrie and Damon Niquet, 8-6, in the flight finals.
Biosca also found success in singles play, knocking off Virginia’s Justin Shane, 6-3, 7-6, to advance to the final round of the Orange Singles flight where he will face off against Ben Guthrie (William & Mary) Sunday morning. Entering the season, Shane was ranked in the ITA Top 125.
Two other Buccaneers also advanced to singles flight finals, including Diego Nunez, who picked up a hard-fought come-from-behind win over Binghamton’s Thomas Caputo (2-6, 6-3, 7-6) before knocking off Jason Luu of Cornell (6-4, 6-1) in the White Singles flight. Nunez will take on Virginia’s JC Aragone Sunday in the flight finals.
Sebastian Yllera picked up a pair of wins Saturday to advance to the finals of the Green Singles flight where he will play Jorge Azuero of Liberty.
“So far, we’ve had an awesome showing,” head coach Yaser Zaatini said. “With a ranked win from Biosca, an epic comeback win from Nunez, and a solid performance, we were very pleased. The rest of the Bucs are showing great progress and they’ve made our Buccaneer Nation so very proud.”
Sunday’s competition will mark the final day of the three-day tournament.
