KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 15, 2014) - In its first regular season action as a Southern Conference representative since 2005, the ETSU men’s tennis team will open the 2015 campaign this weekend, taking on ranked opponents North Florida and Wake Forest on the road.
ETSU, in pursuit of its ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, returns all but one player from last season’s Atlantic Sun Championship squad, including David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico), who each earned All-Atlantic Sun First Team honors as freshman in 2014.
Friday, the 67th-ranked Buccaneers will go toe-to-toe in Knoxville, Tenn., with a familiar foe from ETSU’s recent past: No. 72 North Florida. During ETSU’s current streak of eight consecutive conference tournament championships, the Bucs met the Ospreys in the A-Sun tournament final each of the past three seasons, with ETSU winning each time.
Both ETSU and UNF feature one player ranked in the ITA NCAA Division I Singles Rankings. Following a freshman campaign in which he posted a combined singles/doubles mark of 11-1 in A-Sun play, ETSU’s Biosca earned the No. 85 ranking, while UNF’s Jack Findel-Hawkins was rated No. 72. Findel-Hawkins and teammate Norbert Nemcsek earned the No. 28 ITA doubles ranking.
Saturday, ETSU will visit No. 20 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Demon Deacons, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, feature three players ranked in the ITA Singles Rankings.
Friday’s match versus UNF is set to begin at 1:30 p.m., while Saturday’s meeting at Wake Forest is set for 6:00 p.m.
