ETSU sweeps singles play to top Wofford, 4-1
Sunday, March 22, 2015

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 22, 2015) - With a hard-fought, 4-1 win at Wofford Sunday, the ETSU men's tennis team earned its fifth victory in the last six matches, while simultaneously snapping the Terriers' four-match win streak.

"This Terrier team came ready to rumble," ETSU head coach Yaser Zaatini said. "Due to the weather and the chance of rain, we moved inside, and there is no doubt that these guys are solid on fast courts."

Co-captain Ismael Merino (Lima, Peru) and freshman Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) earned a win at No. 2 Doubles, 8-2, extending their win streak to six matches, but the Buccaneers (6-7, 2-0 SoCon) fell short in doubles play, eventually losing the point to the Terriers (8-7, 2-1 SoCon).

"They took it to us in doubles, and we squandered three or four match points," Zaatini said. "When it was time for singles, it was a dogfight. The sets were tight, especially at No. 1 and No. 2, where we looked like we were on the losing side almost to the end."

The Bucs responded to the Terriers' tenacity by winning four singles spots to seal the 4-1 match victory.

Sophomore Conner Huertas (Lima, Peru) and junior Sebastian Yllera (Cinco Saltos, Argentina) obtained straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 Singles, respectively, to give the Bucs a 2-1 match advantage.

David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) earned his point, winning a thriller of a match at the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6.

Co-captain Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) clinched the match with a hard-fought, 7-6, 2-6, 7-5 win at No. 2 Singles.

"Rogerio Ribeiro and David Biosca showed a lot of poise and love for this Buccaneer team. When things got tougher, they got stronger and pulled out a pair of tough matches, respectively," Zaatini said.

The Bucs will return home Friday, March 27 as they take on UNC Wilmington in non-conference action at 12:00 p.m.
