SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 9, 2016) – The ETSU men’s and women’s tennis teams made it a clean sweep Tuesday as both programs notched SoCon player of the week awards. Marina Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) took home the women’s player of the week, while Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) earned the men’s player of the week honor for all matches through Feb. 7.
“It is awesome that our student-athletes are recognized for their efforts this early in the season,” said ETSU Director of Tennis Yaser Zaatini. “It sets a standard as to what we want to accomplish day-by-day, week-by week. Hopefully this is the beginning of great things to come. Congrats to both Marina and Robert.”
Espana, who is a true freshman, is 4-0 in singles play and is 3-0 in doubles competition in her first season as a Buc. Espana has not only helped the Bucs gain a 4-0 record in dual matches so far this season but also a combined record of 22-2 mark in singles and an 11-0 record in doubles competition.
Herrera has been ETSU’s top player so far this spring posting a 5-1 mark in singles action and a 4-2 record in doubles. Both win totals are tied for the team lead in those categories. The highlight of Herrera’s season so far was when he earned a singles and doubles victory at No. 43 Georgia Tech in the season opener.
The ETSU women’s tennis squad will be back in action Sunday when it hosts Emory University at the Bristol Racket Club at 9 a.m. The men’s team will return to the court Feb. 26 when it travels to Georgia to take on Georgia State.
