JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 25, 2016) – After 20 days off from competition, the ETSU men’s tennis team will return to action this weekend as it takes on No. 63 Georgia State Friday and No. 16 Georgia Sunday. The match times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
The Bucs’ record currently sits at 3-3 this season with all three losses coming against ranked opponents. ETSU’s three wins this season have come against Penn, Portland and Appalachian State, and it dropped matches to No. 43 Georgia Tech, No. 11 Wake Forest and No. 45 Washington.
Sophomore Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) has been ETSU’s top singles player through the early going with a 5-1 record. Herrera’s only defeat this season was against Wake Forest’s Jo Ho who at the time was ranked 103rd in the nation.
While Herrera has paced ETSU in singles, the duo of David Biosca (San Fruitos De Bage, Spain) and Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) have done the same in doubles. Biosca and Ribeiro not only lead the team with a 5-1 record, but they also own the team’s only win over a nationally ranked duo as they defeated the team of No. 25 Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest.
The 63rd-ranked Panthers are fresh off a victory over No. 65 Wichita State on Saturday. GSU is led by reigning Sun Belt Student-Athlete of the Week Zackery Kennedy. Kennedy posted three victories over the weekend to help his team not only defeat Wichita State but also push No. 15 Oklahoma State to a 4-3 final tally.
No. 16 Georgia, which is 4-3 this season, has three singles players and one doubles duo in the Oracle/ITA College Tennis Rankings. The team of Ben Wagland and Austin Smith lead the group of ranked Bulldogs coming in as the fifth-ranked team in the nation. Smith, who is also ranked No. 52 in singles, is joined in the singles rankings by Wayne Montgomery (No. 27) and freshman Walker Duncan (No. 104).
