JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 4, 2016) – The 63rd-ranked ETSU men’s tennis team heads to Alabama for a pair of matches this weekend against UAB Saturday and Samford Sunday. The match against the Blazers is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time, while Sunday’s match, which is the SoCon opener for both squads, at Samford is set to begin at noon.
The Bucs enter play this weekend with a 3-5 record and all five of the losses came against ranked opponents. Individually, ETSU is led by David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) who notched a win over the 21st-ranked player in nation, Wayne Montgomery, last weekend. Biosca is 5-3 playing out of the No. 1 singles slot and is 5-2 in doubles action when teamed with Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
UAB is 5-4 this spring, including a perfect 3-0 on its home court. The Blazers have three singles players with record over the .500 mark in Eric Komati (6-2), Luiz Felipe Pinto (4-2) and Oliver Poysti (5-4). In doubles play the duo of Pinto and Christian Coetzee boast the team’s only winning record in doubles at 5-3.
Samford currently sits atop the SoCon standings with a record of 5-3 with all five victories coming on its home court. The Bulldogs have a winning percentage of .615 in singles and .600 in doubles through the early part of the season. Jake Faundez has the team’s best record as he is a combined 9-1 this season in singles and doubles play.
