WINSTON SALEM, N.C. (May 12, 2016) – The 55th-ranked ETSU men’s tennis team will face off against No. 24 Michigan Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Winston Salem, N.C. ETSU and Wolverines are scheduled to get underway at noon.
Scouting the Buccaneers: ETSU enters the NCAA Tournament fresh off its tenth consecutive conference tournament championship April 22-24 in Chattanooga. The Bucs, who have participated in 14 of the 18 NCAA Tournaments, have been playing their best tennis of the season lately as they have won 15 straight matches and have an overall record of 18-5.
Individually, the Bucs are led by two-time SoCon Player of the Year David Biosca (Sant Fruitos De Bage, Spain). Biosca, who was named the SoCon Player of the Month for April last week, is the 80th-ranked player in the latest Oracle/ITA National Singles Rankings after finishing the regular season with a record of 16-4. Biosca and senior Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) are also ranked No. 63 in the national doubles rankings.
Scouting Michigan: No. 24 Michigan comes into Friday’s match with a record of 20-7 overall, including a perfect 14-0 mark on its home court. The Wolverines will be returning to the NCAA Tournament after a one-year absence but they have made the field of 64 in 10 of the past 11 seasons.
The Wolverines are led by a pair of 20-win players in Carter Lin (22 wins) and Kevin Wong (20 wins), while Jathan Malik is the team’s only nationally ranked player coming in at No. 96 in this week’s rankings.
