TULSA, Okla. (May 24, 2016) – ETSU men’s tennis players David Biosca (Sant Fruitos De Bage, Spain) and Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) will participate in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship beginning Wednesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Biosca will compete in the singles tournament, while the duo of Biosca and Ribeiro will take part in the doubles bracket. It is the first time in program history that the Bucs have had the team, a singles player and a doubles team make the NCAA Tournament.
Biosca, who was named the Southern Conference’s Player of the Year for the second straight season earlier this month, will open the tournament against the top-ranked player in the tournament in Ohio State’s Mikael Torpergaard. Biosca went 17-4 overall, 5-1 in the SoCon this season, while Torpergaard compiled a record of 29-4 overall, including a perfect 7-0 mark in Big Ten play. Biosca is the fourth ETSU player in program history to represent the school in the NCAA Tournament as a singles competitor joining former Bucs: Charles Bottoni (2010), Enrique Oliveras (2009 and 2008) and current Head Coach Yaser Zaatini (1993, 1992, 1991).
In the doubles bracket, Biosca and Ribeiro will take on the duo of Hayden Sabaka and Bart Van Leijsen from New Mexico. The tandem of Biosca and Ribeiro went 11-6 this spring, while Sabaka and Van Leijsen boast a record of 24-11 overall and a 4-4 mark against ranked opponents. Biosca and Ribeiro, who came in at No. 63 in the latest Oracle/ITA National Doubles Rankings, are the first doubles duo to make the NCAA Tournament in program history.
Biosca’s match against Torpergaard is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, while the doubles match involving Biosca and Ribeiro will be played Thursday with the start time yet to be determined.
