WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Jan. 13, 2016) – To open the season, the ETSU men’s tennis team traveled to No. 2 Wake Forest on Saturday, but the Bucs were upended 6-1 with the lone win coming from Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) upsetting the No. 21 Christian Seraphim in three sets.
The lone point for ETSU came from Herrera in singles play. Him and the highly ranked, Seraphim, went into three sets. Herrera took the first set 7-6 (7-4). He fell in the second set 6-7 (2-7) but rebounded in the third set, 1-0 (10-7).
Wake Forest swept the other five singles matches, but No. 43 David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) competed with the No. 1 overall singles player Petros Chrysochos. Biosca took the top ranked player into two sets but lost 6-4 in both sets.
ETSU tried to pull a point out of doubles play, but the Demon Deacons won the last two matches to earn the point. Biosca and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) defeated Alan Gadjiev and Borna Gojo 6-2. Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) and Herrera pushed the number one doubles team to their limits but lost 6-3.
ETSU will take a day off before the team travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to square off against Alabama. Match between the Bucs and Crimson Tide is set for 2 p.m. (eastern).
Order of finish: Doubles (2,3,1); Singles (4,5,2,6,1,3)
