TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Jan. 16, 2016) – In a back and forth head-to-head meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the ETSU men’s tennis team nearly pulled off the upset over No. 41 Alabama on Monday night.
The Bucs nearly snuck out the first point of the head-to-head in doubles play. Alabama took the first doubles match 6-3, but ETSU put the pressure on the Crimson Tide when Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) and Robert Herrera (Barcelon, Spain) upset No. 32 doubles team Mazen Osama and Spencer Richey, 7-5. In the third match of doubles competition, ETSU and Alabama had to go to 13 sets to decide the victor. Unfortunately, David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) fell 7-6 (7-2) to give Alabama the first point.
The Crimson Tide took the first two singles matches, but ETSU’s David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) defeated Ritchie Kruunenberg 6-3, 6-4 to give ETSU its first point of the match. Herrera followed with a two-set victory that came down to the wire, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Herrera has started his season going 2-0 in singles play including upsetting the No. 21 ranked Serphim of Wake Forrest.
With only one point away from claiming the head-to-head victory, No. 78 Thibault Cancel of Alabama defeated No. 65 Nunez in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
After opening up the season with two tough road losses to No. 2 Wake Forrest and No. 41 Alabama, ETSU will take 12 days off before it flies off to Los Angeles, Calif. to play in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Tournament.
Order of finish: Doubles (3,1,2); Singles (5,4,6,3,2)
