JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 17, 2017) – Continuing its longest road stretch of the season, the ETSU men’s tennis team will hit the road to open Southern Conference play with as they travel to Wofford and UNCG this weekend.
About the Bucs
ETSU opens conference play with a 4-6 record and winners of its last two matches against Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast.
Leading the Bucs this year in singles play are David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain). Biosca has been red-hot lately as he has won five straight singles matches and boasts a 5-2 overall record. He has also defeated three nationally ranked opponents in four matches this year. Herrera is having a career-best season as he is 8-2 on the year and 1-1 against nationally ranked opponents. He has transitioned into the No. 2 slot, but he is 7-1 on the year in the No. 3 position for the Blue and Gold.
In doubles play, Juan Lugo (Venezuela) and Biosca have played well lately, as they are 2-0 to open the season. Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) and Herrera have played solely out of the No. 1 position for ETSU, and they are 5-4 in tandem play and 1-1 against nationally ranked opponents.
The Terriers are 10-6 on the year, and they are 1-0 on the year in the SoCon as they fell to Mercer at home 5-2. In four matches this year, Wofford has defeated its opponent without surrendering a loss.
Haris Poric has played solely in the No. 1 slot for Wofford as he is 7-5 on the year. He is 5-4 in the last ten matches and 1-0 against SoCon opponents. Lucas Cerbelli is 9-5 overall this season, and he is 0-1 in conference matches. He has posted an impressive 9-3 record playing out of the No. 2 position for Wofford.
Cerbelli and Jack Thomas have been one of the best doubles tandems for Wofford as they are 7-1 overall this year. They have played solely out of the No. 3 position and led Wofford to an 11-4 overall record in that position. Julian Chousa and Poric are the most dominant at the No. 1 doubles slot as they are 7-5 on the year and are 0-1 in SoCon play. As a team in doubles, Wofford is 25-15.
About the Spartans
UNCG enters the weekend with a 5-3 record including a 1-0 mark in SoCon play. The Spartans hosted Chattanooga nearly two weeks ago, and they upended the Mocs 5-2. Before hosting the Bucs on March 19, the Spartans will play East Carolina in Greensboro, N.C. UNCG is a perfect 4-0 at home.
The Spartan’s have a pair of players that shine in singles tennis between Connor Thompson and Marcus Vidgren as they are a combined 10-5. Thompson has the best overall record, as he is 5-2 on the year and 1-0 in the SoCon. Vidgren is 5-3 overall and undefeated in conference. The same two players are the best duo on the Spartan squad as they have played solely out of the No. 1 slot as have posted a 5-2 record.
