SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 18, 2017) – To open its Southern Conference play on Saturday, the ETSU men’s tennis team cruised past Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. 5-2 as the Bucs swept all three doubles matches and took four singles matches en route to their third straight win.
For the first time this year, ETSU swept all three doubles matches. David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and Juan Lugo (Venezuela) earned the first ETSU win as the duo continued their undefeated season as they moved to 3-0.
Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) followed their teammates win as they upended Haris Poric and Trevor Gotkowski 7-5 in the No. 1 slot. Herrera and Nunez moved to a team-best 6-4 this season in doubles competition. David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) and Wenceslao Albin (Salliquelo, Argentina) earned their second straight win as they rounded out the victories for the Blue and Gold in doubles play.
The Blue and Gold continued its winning ways as the team won the next three singles matches to at least claim the match victory.
Herrera earned the first singles win as he won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 over Parks Schoen, and he extended his team-best singles record to 9-2. Gonzalez earned the second win for ETSU as he upended Julian Chousa 6-3, 6-3, and Biosca secured the dual match win as he won in straight sets as well.
Wofford claimed the next two singles points, and Lugo defeated Jack Thomas in a three-set battle to conclude the head-to-head match.
The Bucs move to 5-6 on the year and 1-0 in SoCon play. Wofford drops to 10-7 overall and 0-2 in the Southern Conference.
ETSU will continue its SoCon play as the Bucs will travel to UNCG Sunday to play the Spartans. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
