JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 23, 2017) – Looking to carry its win streak, the ETSU men’s tennis team will continue its Southern Conference play with a pair of road matches at Mercer and Chattanooga this weekend.
About the Bucs
ETSU has won four straight games dating back to March 8 at Florida Atlantic. In that stretch, the Bucs have won two SoCon road matches at Wofford and UNCG to begin their conference schedule.
The Blue and Gold enter its second weekend of SoCon play with a 6-6 overall mark and a 2-0 SoCon record. After losing four matches on the road to begin the season, the Bucs have found their groove as they have won four straight on the road.
Continuing to lead the surge for the men’s tennis team is senior David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and junior Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain). Playing solely out of the No. 1 positon for ETSU, Biosca is ranked No. 51 in the country after winning six of his last seven singles matches. Herrera came in at No. 107 for ETSU after winning three consecutive and eight of his last nine singles matches.
In doubles play, ETSU has three tandems that are 1-1 this year in the Southern Conference. Overall, Biosca and Juan Lugo (Venezuela) have the best record at 3-1 playing out of the No. 2 position. Herrera and Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) are right behind their teammates at 6-5 this year and 1-1 against nationally ranked doubles teams.
The Bears enter the weekend with a 17-2 mark including winning 16 straight matches. Mercer is a perfect 12-0 at home and 2-0 in the SoCon with wins over The Citadel and Wofford.
Mercer has several individuals with double-digit wins this season with Nicolas Guillon and Olivier Stuart leading the team with 13 each. Guillon has spent time in the No. 1 and No. 2 position for Mercer. He is 13-4 overall and boasts a 7-3 overall record as the No. 1 player for the Bears. Stuart is 13-2 this year and has played mainly out of the No. 3 slot, and he has posted a 12-2 mark in that position.
Sam Philp and Stuart are the only Bears to have played in both SoCon doubles matches and have come out undefeated. They have a 6-4 overall record playing out of the No. 1 position. However, leading Mercer is Fernando Guardia and Guillon who are 9-5 this season in doubles play.
Scouting the Mocs
Chattanooga enters the weekend with a 5-11 mark after upending Tennessee Wesleyan at home on Wednesday, and the win ended a four game losing skid for UTC. The Mocs have played and lost two Southern Conference matches this year with both being on the road at UNCG and The Citadel.
Prior to the match with Tennessee Wesleyan, the Mocs were 34-47 in dual singles matches this season with Simon Bustamante leading the surge for his team. He was 7-4 overall this season and 0-1 in the SoCon.
In doubles tennis, the team had a 19-20 clip with Niklas Gerdes and Nik Wilson playing most matches out of the No. 1 position for Mercer. The duo were 4-2 including posting a 3-2 record in the No. 1 position for Chattanooga.
