JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 31, 2017) – The ETSU men’s tennis team looks to carry its unblemished Southern Conference record into a home weekend at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex, as the Bucs welcome Samford and Furman to Johnson City.
About the Bucs
ETSU enters its longest home stretch of the season with an 8-6 overall record and a perfect 4-0 record in the SoCon.
The Blue and Gold hold a six-game win streak with all of the wins coming on the road. During that same stretch, the Bucs defeated four straight SoCon rivals in Wofford, UNCG, Mercer and Chattanooga.
Continuing to lead the Bucs this season is David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain). The duo has a combined 20-5 singles record with Herrera leading the charge at 12-2. Juan Lugo (Venezuela) and Wenceslao Albin (Salliquelo, Argentina) have found their groove lately as Lugo has won five straight matches and Albin with three consecutive.
In doubles competition, Herrera and Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) continue to be the backbone for the Bucs as they hold an 8-5 overall record and 3-1 SoCon mark. Albin and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) have found their groove as the duo has won two straight doubles matches.
The Bulldogs enter the head-to-head match with a 4-9 overall record and an 0-2 mark in the SoCon. They have lost two straight matches and are winless on the road (0-7).
In singles play, Eduardo L. Sanchez leads Samford as he is 6-2 on the year and 1-1 in the SoCon. Behind him are Jake Faundez and Max Rebol as the pair is 5-6 this season in solo play.
The Bulldogs have yet to pick up a win in Southern Conference play, as the Bulldogs are 0-6 in tandem competition. Faundez and Sanchez have the best overall record, as the tandem is 3-4 as a team.
About the Paladins
Furman comes to Johnson City with a 14-5 overall record and winners of five straight matches. The Paladins are 4-0 in the SoCon this year as they have upended Samford, The Citadel, Wofford and Chattanooga this year. The trip to ETSU will conclude a four-game road set for Furman, which the team is undefeated in the previous three matches.
The leader of the Paladins is Adam Steryous – who is 16-1 on the year. Steryous has played solely out of the No. 1 slot for Furman and has won 16 straight matches. Cameron Green and Jake Munns have combined for a 24-12 record as they are each undefeated in the SoCon this year.
In doubles play, Furman has two tandems that have been solid in Trevor Croyder/Clark Wilson and Munns/Steryous. Munns and Steryous have played solely out of the No. 1 slot for the Paladins and sport a 12-4 overall record and 4-0 in the conference. Croyder and Wilson are 14-2 overall playing mainly out of the No. 3 position. As a team, the Paladins are an astounding 40-13 in doubles play this year.
