JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 6, 2017) – Winner’s of six Southern Conference matches and eight consecutive games, the ETSU men’s tennis team will host a pair of non-conference matches at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex this weekend.
The Bucs will host Central Florida on Friday, April 7 at 2 p.m. followed by UNC-Wilmington on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
About the Bucs
ETSU has won eight straight matches including six straight conference games. However, the Bucs will take a break from SoCon play as they host two non-conference matches. The Blue and Gold currently sport a 10-6 record including a perfect 6-0 record in conference matches.
Junior Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) has been red-hot lately, as he has won seven straight matches in singles play. He has a 14-2 overall record, and he comes in nationally ranked at 115 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings. Senior David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) is the highest ranked Buccaneer in solo play as he comes in at No. 61 in the country. He is 10-3 this season and has won four straight matches. He is also 3-1 against nationally ranked opponents.
Solely out of the No. 3 slot, Wenceslao Albin (Salliquelo, Argentina) and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) have been playing well this year as they have the longest current doubles winning streak on the squad (4). Biosca and Juan Lugo (Venezuela) have the best winning percentage (.714), as they are 5-2 on the year out of the No. 2 position.
Previewing Central Florida
The Knights enter the weekend ranked No. 31 in the country. They are 12-5 on the season and have won four straight matches. However, UCF is 2-3 on the road.
Central Florida is coming off a big win in its last outing as the Knights downed South Florida, who was ranked No. 26 in the country. The victory marked UCF’s fourth win against a top-30 opponent this season.
Korey Lovett is UCF’s top player as he is ranked No. 70 in the country, according to the ITA. Lovett was recently named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week. In singles play, he is 11-6 this year and 2-4 against nationally ranked opponents. In doubles, the junior is 8-5 overall as he has played with four teammates this year out of the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.
About the Seahawks
UNC-Wilmington enters the weekend with an overall record of 10-5 and is 3-1 in its last four matches. In home matches, the Seahawks are 8-2, and on the road, they are 1-2.
As a team, UNCW is 43-32 overall in singles play including going 0-4 against nationally ranked singles. Ignasi de Rueda has the best singles record for UNCW as he is 10-3 playing out of the No. 3 and 4 slots for the Seahawks. He has won four straight matches and is 8-1 in his last ten matches. Leon Back is 5-3 this year playing in No. 5 and 6, and he has won three straight singles matches.
The Seahawks are 15-20 this year in doubles. De Rueda and Agustin Savarino have the best winning percentage as the duo sit at 4-1 this season. UNCW has used 13 different combinations of doubles teams this year in hopes to find success. Its most effective slot is the No. 2 as five different tandems have combined for a 5-5 record.
