SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 11, 2017) – ETSU men’s tennis player David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) was named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week, which was announced by the league offices on Tuesday.
The senior led the Bucs to a 1-1 overall record last week with the win coming against UNC-Wilmington in Johnson City, Tenn. The lone team loss came against nationally ranked Central Florida (No. 31) on the Bucs home court. During the week, Biosca went a perfect 4-0 including defeating No. 70 Korey Lovett of UCF in singles play.
His first victory of the week came in doubles against the Knights when him and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) defeated Lovett and Kalman Boyd 7-5. The win was the first of two victories for the Bucs in the doubles slot against UCF.
Following his first victory, the senior upended No. 70 Lovett in three sets – 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. With the win, Biosca is now 3-1 against nationally ranked singles players.
Despite Biosca winning two of the nine total matches on Friday, the Bucs went on to be narrowly defeated 4-3. However, ETSU rebounded on Sunday as the team swept UNC-Wilmington, 4-0.
Biosca continued to stay hot as he earned a 7-5 victory in the second flight with Este over Ignasi de Rueda and Agustin Savarino. After ETSU won the doubles point, Biosca won the first singles match early as he defeated Josh Hublitz in the No. 1 slot 6-2, 6-1. The singles win marks Biosca’s sixth straight win and moves him to 8-1 in his last ten matches and 12-3 overall this season.
ETSU returns to action Wednesday as the Bucs visit Middle Tennessee State University with a 3 p.m. serve.
