SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 26, 2017) – ETSU men’s tennis player David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held April 19-25, the league office announced Wednesday.
Biosca helped guide the ETSU men’s tennis to its 11th straight SoCon Championship and was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player. The senior won every set in both singles and doubles play at the SoCon Championship as the No. 56 ranked player defeated Chattanooga’s Lucas Plesky, 6-4, 6-0, while he and teammate Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) won the double match, 6-3.
The next day Biosca defeated UNCG’s Connor Thompson, 7-6, 6-1 in the semifinals and again won the doubles match with him and Este taking down Marcus Vidgren and Jack Burkill, 6-2. Despite ETSU losing the doubles point, the Bucs rallied for the 4-1 win, while his win over Thompson clinched the match.
In Sunday’s championship vs. Mercer, Biosca defeated Nicolas Guillon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, while he and Este won the doubles match, 6-2. Biosca, a native of Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain, resulted in two match-clinching wins over Chattanooga and UNCG.
In the classroom, Biosca boasts a 3.561 grade point average as a double-major in Marketing and Management.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
